There is a movement gaining momentum throughout our group of friends and it is threatening to sweep us up and off to the Land of OZ also known as The Garden State. My sister lives in NJ with her daughter Lena, yesterday Andri and I took a day trip there to reconnect with an old friend of mine and today we had brunch with some soon to be Jersey-ites. They made no bones about the purpose of inviting us to brunch–they want us to move out to Jersey too. The smell of Jersey is in the air. We’ve heard it said that there are worse things than moving out to Jersey and that it really calls for a redefining of ones identity to move to NJ but I’m not completely sure I’m ready to cross the Hudson for good. The thought of a backyard and a house are appealing and it would be nice to be closer to Lu and Lena and our friends that will no longer be around the corner but a subway and NJ Transit trip away but… I would so miss being able to walk out my door and have just about all of my needs met without getting in a car or leaving the neighborhood. Deep down I think I’m resigned to the fact that we just can’t afford to have the kind of space we want in the sections of Brooklyn that are family friendly but I would sorely miss being a New Yorker. I guess it’s the price of being a responsible grown-up. It’s not all about living in the big city anymore. New Jersey’s not so bad…right?
